Bamboo bar is a fiberglass or composite barbell that oscillates during the exercise. It is used with elastic bands to connect the weights to it. Using bands to connect the weighs to the bar increases the oscillations during the exercises which leads to activation of stabilization muscles. One can perform bench press, bicep curls, rear dealt pulls with the bamboo bar.
The Earthquake bar is very similar to the bamboo bar and it is designed to hold a lot of weight in a more customized fashion unlike the bamboo bar. Since the earthquake bar can use much heavier weights, it is perfect for deadlifts, squats and bench press.
The cool thing about the bamboo bar and earthquake bar is that even with lighter weights, it can be super challenging. It will fire up your muscles and you will notice it is different than anything else you ever tried.
I like to use the bamboo bar and earthquake bar for isometric holds. One of my standard workouts is putting 100 lbs on the bamboo bar and perform isometric holds on the bench press. This is super challenging. If you try this exercise, try to build up to a couple minutes and increase the weight with time.
I like to think that bamboo bar isometric hold is a very functional exercise. Since this exercise activates so many stabilizer muscles, If I perform this exercise on regular basis, I notice that during my wrestling, judo sparring seasons I have a strength that is more transferable. In sports such as judo and wrestling, there are 3 dimensional forces that are constantly in work and the more one can use their stabilizer muscles, the more control they can establish over their opponent. In judo and wrestling, there are many isometric contractions that happen so this makes the benchpress isometric holds very suitable exercise.
The bamboo and earthquake bars can be very expensive and I recommend using PVC pipe instead. You can buy PVC pipes in different thicknesses and when you use thicker PVC pipes for bench pressing, you will notice that your forearms will get more involved in the exercise.
The bamboo bar and earthquake bar are great for shoulder rehabilitation since they both activate many stabilizers in the shoulder. This might not be the best practice for all shoulder injuries but you may want to consult a physical therapist to see if it suitable for the nature of your injury.
